SSB Interview: Complete Process, Tests, Questions and Preparation Guide
The SSB interview is a five-day selection process used to assess whether a candidate has the qualities required to become an officer in the Indian Armed Forces. SSB stands for Services Selection Board.
This guide explains the NDA SSB interview process, SSB interview stages, tests, questions, documents, preparation strategy and common mistakes.
What Is the SSB Interview?
The SSB interview is not only a general knowledge or written examination. It is a personality and officer-potential assessment. Assessors observe communication, reasoning, teamwork, initiative, responsibility, social adaptability, determination, courage and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Who Is Called for the NDA SSB Interview?
Candidates who qualify through the written examination or are shortlisted through the applicable entry process receive instructions for the SSB selection process. The exact reporting details, centre, documents and instructions are mentioned in the official call-up information.
SSB Interview Process: Complete 5-Day Schedule
Day 0: Reporting and Document Verification
Candidates report at the designated railway station or SSB centre, complete joining formalities and undergo document verification. Keep original certificates, photographs, identity proof, call-up instructions and required copies ready.
Day 1: Screening Test
The first day is the screening stage. It generally includes the Officer Intelligence Rating test and the Picture Perception and Discussion Test.
OIR Test
The OIR test checks verbal and non-verbal reasoning, basic mathematics, series, classification, coding-decoding, analogy, spatial ability and comprehension. Speed and accuracy are both important.
PPDT
In PPDT, candidates observe a picture for a limited time, write a story and then participate in a group discussion. Assessors observe perception, clarity of thought, confidence, listening, cooperation and the ability to present ideas without dominating the group.
Candidates who clear screening continue with the remaining tests according to the board procedure.
Day 2: Psychology Tests
The psychology testing stage helps assess natural responses, imagination, decision-making and emotional balance.
- Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): writing stories based on pictures.
- Word Association Test (WAT): writing the first meaningful response for a series of words.
- Situation Reaction Test (SRT): responding to practical situations within limited time.
- Self Description Test (SDT): describing oneself and views held by parents, teachers, friends and the candidate.
There is no single model answer. Honest, practical, positive and action-oriented responses are more useful than memorised lines.
Day 3 and Day 4: GTO Tasks
The Group Testing Officer assesses teamwork, planning, leadership, physical involvement, communication and practical problem-solving.
- Group Discussion
- Group Planning Exercise
- Progressive Group Task
- Group Obstacle Race or Snake Race
- Half Group Task
- Lecturette
- Individual Obstacles
- Command Task
- Final Group Task
Leadership does not mean shouting or controlling every task. Participate actively, help the group, follow instructions and remain respectful.
Personal Interview
The SSB personal interview may take place during the testing period. Questions are usually connected with the candidate’s application form, education, family, hobbies, friends, daily routine, current affairs, achievements, responsibilities, strengths, weaknesses and reasons for joining the Armed Forces.
Common SSB Interview Questions

No single book can guarantee selection. Use reliable material for reasoning, current affairs, communication and practice, and combine it with outdoor activity and real group interaction.
What happens after SSB recommendation?
